About the Loft
Kensington Market Lofts is a conversion of three buildings which were converted by Context Developments in 200. One of the three buildings, a former public school house was built in 1921, the very school in which Mayor Mel Lastman attended as a child. George Brown College was last to occupy the three buildings before they were converted. When the campus was closed in 1993, Kensington Market suffered an economic downturn. Hard loft features vary between the 3 converted buildings. Some include concrete ceilings, hardwood, concrete, or bamboo floors, open concept plans, mezzanines and the occasional terrace or balcony.
About Kensington
Kensington Market was originally part of a 100 acre park that was granted to Captain John Denison in 1815. By the 1870’s, this district had developed into a middle class, Anglo-Saxon neighbourhood. During the early 1900’s, however, Jewish immigrants started to settle here, and by the 1940’s Kensington had attracted immigrants from all over the world making the Kensington Market the unique multicultural shopping area it is today.
